Our History

For over 100 years...

Boyd Construction Company continues to provide premium service to all our clients. Vincent R. Boyd, Sr. or Doc Boyd moved from Chicago to start Boyd Construction Company in Hobart, Indiana in 1911. He first rented the property where the Old Roller Bearing Factory once stood, and then went to purchase the land on Third Street at the site of the Old Street Car Barn. In the early years, Doc helped Northwest Indiana grow to be what it is today. In his early teens, Doc’s son Vincent R. Boyd, Jr. (Bud) came to work operating crews, and laying sewers.

In 1914...

they helped to build the Hobart Mill and in 1916 they constructed the 3rd Street Bridge. In 1929 Doc engineered and constructed the Lake George Dam, which is still in use today. A majority of all the sewers and water mains in Hobart, Lake Station and New Chicago were completed by Boyd Construction. In Portage, Indiana Boyd Construction did a majority of the water works. Boyd Construction dug the foundation for Hobart’s new Scout Cabin, as well as the foundations for many of Hobart’s church buildings, all free of charge.

As Boyd Construction has grown...

it has also diversified and kept pace with changing times. Boyd Construction built the city’s first ready-mix cement plant in 1946, and has replaced it twice with newer plants as design and technology have advanced. In 1974, Boyd Construction began working in the Sarasota, FL area, rapidly gaining clients in the Florida region.

During the 1980’s...

Boyd Construction Company operated in two locations, one in Florida, and the original location in Indiana. In the latter 1980’s Richard closed the doors in the Florida office to focus on the economic boom of the Midwest. Boyd Construction performed essential service in World War II: crane-work in the AMOCO refinery, and construction in the East Chicago Shipyards. They built Hobart Festival Park in 1988, and were involved in the 1993 Lake Shore improvements.
